Small Business Spotlight: Scott relieves stress by cleaning – Brainerd Dispatch

BRAINARD – Jenny Scott, owner of Tru Clean Housekeeping, enjoys what most people consider stressful.

Scott Tru started Clean Housekeeping over a year ago. She wanted to find a job where she could spend time with her family and be a stay-at-home mom to her almost 2-year-old son. She’s had a bit of hospitality experience before, but she wanted to do something she loved.

Cleaning is Scott’s favorite thing to do. Unlike some people, she finds it relaxing. She thought cleaning was something she could do during the day and maintain a balance between being a mother and a business owner.

With the help and support of her fiance Jeremy Hodges, Scott began her career. Tru Clean Housekeeper stands for honest, trustworthy and understanding – something Scott says she prides herself on. She said she wants to trust her clients and understand everyone’s situation.

“I just want to help,” Scott said. “My main thing is that I want people to help me in any way I can. It doesn’t matter if I clean the bathrooms once, I just want to help.”

It was important to Scott to start her business with the support of her fiance and children. At age 10, Scott was adopted from Columbia and moved to Minnesota. Although she doesn’t have a good relationship with her adoptive parents, she says the support from Hodges and her three children has meant the world to her.

Scott said people told her she was never going anywhere as a child. She gets down and uses the negative to motivate herself to do more. She wants to prove to the people who don’t believe in her – and to herself – that she can do it.

Scott has lived in the Brainerd Lakes area for most of her life and has no plans to move anytime soon. “I don’t think I’m going to leave the area just because it’s not like the cities,” Scott said.

In the Brainerd area, Scott has regular customers she knows well. She partnered with a property rental company that helps clean apartments after people move out.

“I do a little mix of everything,” Scott said. “I work with a couple of realtors. I work with a pair of rentals that I’ve cleaned a lot for movement and outings. I love it, but at the same time, especially in apartments when people leave, I don’t know what to expect when I walk through those doors. But I like the challenge of some of these places. I am not afraid of any challenge.”

Scott finds finishing very satisfying and likes to try to figure out the best way to clean each item. She finds a mix of products that she thinks work best and enjoys what she does. She said she likes the feeling of completing a task.

“It’s hard sometimes, but after I leave this place, the feeling I get from it makes me feel happy that I helped someone,” Scott said. “That’s another thing I like to do, because when I leave after I’ve cleaned a house, sometimes they send messages saying, ‘Thank you so much, you don’t know how much I appreciate you.’ Knowing that I’ve helped is another reason I do it.”

One of the things Scott loves about owning her own business is being her own boss. She manages her schedule and can prioritize spending time with her family and business on different days.

Scott offers a range of services from one-off services to regular cleaning. Currently, she is working with herself as the main employee, but Hodges occasionally comes to help with larger projects. In the future, she hopes to bring in more employees, but she said she wants to make sure that every job she does has the three qualities she looks for: trustworthiness, reliability and understanding.
