Students at the University’s Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTar) Kampar campus recently had the opportunity to put their creativity to the test in fashion.
Armed with reusable items, they designed clothes that modeled in a fashion show competition as part of a series of activities on September 3 to promote the importance of the 5Rs (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recycle).

Named “R-Show in Kampar: 5R Fashion Show Design Competition”, the event was held to celebrate the university’s 20th anniversary and 300 people participated.
The top two in the competition were Mike Yong and Andy Chu who completed 6 teams and took home RM200 and a laptop.
Yong said that Chu modeled during the fashion show and made clothes inspired by streetwear.
“We did not expect to be the champion of the tournament.
We want to share our creativity in fashion while enjoying “do-it-yourself” things. Losing is a bonus,” he said.
“We are grateful that the judges and the audience liked the design,” he said.
The second and third prize winners won RM150 and RM100 each and a laptop each.
Attendee Lau Pei Ying, 21, said the fashion show was unique and featured great ideas that were out-of-the-box.
“It was interesting to see the designers explain their motivations and plans for using recyclable materials and at the same time convey the message of recycling.
“It was a fashion show that I rarely get a chance to see and I hope to see similar events in the future,” she said.
According to Diong Fong Wei, a competition consultant and Yutar teacher, the idea of recycling is not new, but it is still important to continue to encourage it from one generation to the next.
“We need to think of creative ideas for this kind of fashion show to inculcate the habit of recycling among the younger generation.
“I hope our participants now know more about recycling, especially the 5R practice,” Diong said.
Earlier, 35 Bachelor of Communication (Hons) Public Relations students organized a recycling event in the campus in collaboration with the Kampar District Council.
Workshops, lectures and exhibitions were held to promote the importance of 5R in protecting the environment and reducing the incidence of floods in the district.
