Sana Marin takes drug test after ‘wild’ party videos emerge

Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin, 36, told reporters on Friday that she had been drug tested after receiving complaints about videos of her dancing and drinking at a private party.

At a news conference, Marin said she was tested for drugs on Friday and the results will be available in a week. She said she took the test “for my own legal protection and to avoid suspicion.”

She told reporters that she had not done anything illegal and that she had the right to be presumed innocent. “I didn’t use any drugs when I was a teenager,” Marin added.

Series Instagram clipsFirst published by Finnish tabloid Iltaleti, it shows Marin dancing passionately with her friends in what appears to be a private space. Marin described the party to Sky News, and said she was disappointed the videos had become public.

Finnish media reported that a voice in the background could be heard shouting “powder gang” – thought to be referring to cocaine. Marin denies this.

To her knowledge, Marin did not take drugs at the party. “As far as I know, I’ve never had a situation like this before,” she said, according to The Guardian. “I did not see anyone using drugs on the night shown in the video.”

She described her alcohol intake as “moderate” and said she “usually” walked from the party to her car and drove home safely.

One of the world’s youngest leaders, Marin has earned a reputation for partying. In December 2021, she publicly apologized after it was reported that she had been clubbing until 4am despite being exposed to Covid-19.

In July, she attended a Finnish rock festival wearing a leather jacket and denim shorts. With some commentators describing her as “effortlessly cool”, her choice of outfit sparked debate among detractors.
