Rubio urges Biden administration to respect Hyde reform over abortion – Catholic World Report

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio on Tuesday urged the Bidden administration not to pay sick leave to federal workers during their abortions.

“The federal government does not promote the killing of unborn children,” Kiran Ahuja, director of OPM, wrote in a July 5 letter. “I urge the agency to clarify that the federal government does not issue travel sick leave in connection with the abortion service.”

In the letter, the Republican senator expressed concern that granting sick leave to employees who would have an abortion could violate Hyde’s amendment. Legislation prohibits federal funding for abortion, except for rape, incest, or maternity leave.

“The taxpayer is willing to even violate federal law, which prohibits sponsorship of abortion services,” Biden said.

A.D. Following the overthrow of Rovi Wade, which legalized abortion nationally in 1973, federal workers issued sick leave guidelines for “medical services” crossing regional lines.

Rubio wrote in the letter: “It is clear at the time of the announcement that the purpose of the OPM directive is to facilitate the birth of federal workers outside the state.”

The OPM document omits terms such as “abortion” and “reproductive health,” Rubio explained, and instead states, “An employee may find it necessary to travel long distances, including outside the state, for medical care” and “[i]In such cases, sick leave can be used to cover the necessary travel time.

“One can no longer believe that these phrases have been deliberately dropped by the executive branch of law in order to bypass the hype protections mandated by Congress in this directive,” the senator wrote.

Citing President Joe Biden, he said: [for abortion]I will do my best to fight that shallow American aggression.

Hyde reform was first introduced in 1976, and since then has been part of the annual federal budget. It should be linked to federal budget accounts annually. In a bid to Congress for the 2022 budget year, Biden ruled out the Hyde amendment.
