In Photos: The Best of Rihanna’s Rule-Breaking Maternity Style

The timeline of the evolution of maternity fashion is now available in two parts: Before Rihanna and After Rihanna. Until the multi-hyphenate superstar announced she was expecting her first child in January 2022, bumps were often hidden in unflattering shapes — all black or covered in busy prints.
Consciously or unconsciously, pregnant celebrities in the past (before Rihanna, that is) instinctively opted for more conservative cuts on red carpets and other public events. Grecian-draped column dresses, empire-waist dresses or tasteful floaty dresses were the pillars on which maternity fashion was built.
Now, Rihanna’s refusal to change her high-octane style has caused a seismic shift in our perception of baby-board attire.

Although she’s not the first to break the mold — pop culture fans will remember Demi Moore’s 1991 Vanity Fair cover, for example, or Beyoncé’s Botticelli-inspired pregnancy announcement in 2017 — Rihanna’s sartorial rebellion is the most consistent.

Recently, Rihanna made the latest cover of British Vogue a family affair. On the cover of the March 2023 issue, the new mom struts down the beach with her partner A$AP Rocky and baby in tow, unknowingly pregnant. “How crazy both of my kids were in these photos and my mom had no clue,” she wrote on Instagram.
