Rihanna’s epic performance at the Super Bowl on Sunday included a musical montage of her biggest hits, dance numbers on raised stages, a pregnancy reveal — and a sweet tribute to one of her closest style collaborators.
Rihanna took the stage at the Super Bowl halftime show in a layered, red ensemble by Lowe’s.
The outfit was inspired by “flight gear and the dynamic scenery of the scene,” according to the brand’s statement on its website.
The first layer of the monochromatic outfit was the catsuit, which was covered by a leather corset cut above Rihanna’s stomach. She wore an unzipped flight suit over a catsuit and corset, as well as coordinating gloves.
Because the suit was strapped low on her belt, she revealed the child abuse to her second child.
For the show’s finale, Rihanna wore an over-the-top sleeping bag jacket in the same shade of red as the rest of her outfit, according to CNN.
The jacket appeared in tribute to Andre Leon Talley, according to the late fashion editor’s Instagram page.
Talley died in January 2022 after an impressive career in the fashion industry, serving as Vogue’s creative director from 1988 to 1995.
According to Marie Claire, Tally was known for wearing Norma Kamali’s red sleeping bag coat, and Rihanna’s Alaia jacket closely resembled Tally’s coat.
Talley’s Instagram account acknowledged the jacket’s honor with a side-by-side photo of Talley and Rihanna in matching outfits.
The caption read: “When the sun comes up we shine together. I told you I’d be here forever… I said I’d always be your friend,” Rihanna captioned alongside a reference to her “Umbrella” song.
Rihanna and Tali have been close friends, most notably at the 2015 Met Gala when she wore a custom Guo Pei gown that weighed 55 pounds and had a playful relationship.
“You are an inspiration to so many people,” he told her at the gala. “You’re going to inspire people in this dress.”
Tally’s Norma Kamali coat is currently being auctioned along with other pieces from her wardrobe.
