More than two dozen House Republicans introduced legislation this week that would bar the federal government from spending any money on out-of-state travel for women to obtain abortions.
The bill has no chance of advancing under the Democratic leadership. But it’s a clear sign of how the GOP is trying to uphold the Supreme Court’s July decision to challenge Roe v. Wade, arguing that there is no constitutional right to abortion and that states have the power to establish their own abortion laws.
Immediately after the decision, pro-abortion groups and their Democratic allies began planning to fund out-of-state travel, for example, for women seeking abortions within 12 weeks of pregnancy when their home state prohibits abortion after six weeks. Pregnancy.
Some companies have said they will pay for women to travel out of state for abortions, and a few House Democrats have proposed legislation to establish federal subsidies to help women offset the cost of the travel. In July, Rep. Marilyn Strickland, D-Wash., said, “Access to safe and legal reproductive health care, including abortion, should not be limited to those who can afford to travel.”

Norman’s “no federal funds for abortion travel expenses” states that no federal funds can be used to support abortion services “financially or logistically for travel to another state.” The proposal is an extension of the Hyde Amendment, which would have prohibited direct funding for abortions for years if the mother’s life is at risk, such as rape, consanguinity, or carrying a fetus that causes the fetus to die.

Norman said the bill, which has 26 Republican sponsors, rejects Democratic attempts to create a federal funding system for out-of-state travel.
Vulnerable House Democrats are often reluctant to say whether there should be any restrictions on abortion.
“It is absolutely unacceptable that Senate Democrats and the Biden administration are doing everything they can to support abortion in this post-Roe world,” Norman said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“Considering that the Supreme Court recently left the issue of abortion to the states, it is very painful to use federal funds for this purpose,” he said. “Remember, many Democrats, including our president, have held the view that abortion should only be used in rare cases. My Republican colleagues and I will stand down whenever the federal government tries to interfere with the right to life.”
