Representatives from Houston, along with Representative Tom Suozzi of New York, were briefed by Pakistani military rescuers and worked to boost short-term relief efforts. He met Prime Minister Shebaz Sharif on Monday.
“I saw water as far as the eye could see,” said Jackson Lee. “We still see people racing to rescue helicopters and meeting and listening to the men, women and children who have encountered the deadly waters that are raging.”
More than 1,300 people have been killed in floods caused by heavy rains and snow in the country’s northern mountains, the Pakistani government said.
Millions have been displaced in Sindh province, including an estimated 400,000 pregnant women.
Green said the $30 million the United States has put into the aid fund is “not enough.”
“The developed countries of the world should do more to help the people of Pakistan,” he said.
