Relove Fashion, a competition designed by local authorities in collaboration with the Rediscovery Center, was launched for the new school year.
The competition gives students the opportunity to take a second look at how we dress and fashion without creating more interest in resources.
Wicklow County Council led the development of the competition, winning and winning the Outstanding Local Government Award for the innovation.
In a world of fast fashion, we can easily ignore the impact industry is having on our planet and its resources. As we grow cotton to make textiles, manufacture garments and ship them around the world to sell in our stores and online, fashion is affected.
Fashion should not be fast and temporary. Quality clothes and fabrics can be very durable and a good suit is timeless yet stylish.
The ability to work with textiles, reinventing and giving them a new lease of life has always been at the heart of the fashion industry. This competition aims to allow students to test their design skills using old fabrics or create something out of old clothes.
A new modern look is created without using new tools. Part of the circular economy vision is to move from disposable fast fashion to an industry that uses a circular economy, creating jobs while saving resources and adding value to products.
Relove Fashion is giving students a platform to showcase their skills in working with textiles, their creativity in design and their commitment to sustainability. Income that can be individual or group. They will document their design process on a mood board, produce their garments by early January, and be asked about their views on sustainability in the textile and fashion industries.
Open to all secondary school students in Wicklow, the competition fits in well with the Home Economics curriculum as well as the Arts curriculum. It was conducted as a TY project in some schools.
