The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYODOT) is informing residents and travelers about the offerings under the Wyoming Travel Authorization Program (W-TAP) ahead of the 2022-2023 winter season.
What is W-TAP?
Through W-TAP, drivers can apply for a permit to travel on closed road sections.
W-TAP includes the Wyoming Authorized Travel (WAT) and Rolling Closure Authorization (RCA) programs. The WAT application is open to all drivers but requires a driver to justify why they need to travel on a closed road. Drivers are allowed to select up to seven road sections when applying for WAT.
If a closure is in effect, but safe for limited travel, WYDOT will issue a permit and drivers will receive a permit code by email or on the website to travel on the approved sections of highway.
The RCA program is primarily for those with a Wyoming driver’s license and allows drivers to drive under suspension. Drivers are not required to provide proof of travel as part of the application process, but must agree to the terms of the program.
Application and account update
New users can apply for a travel permit on the W-TAP website; over here.
Returning users should use the same website to update their preferred routes, contact information or other account information if necessary. Although no changes are required, users must still confirm that they want to participate in the program each year.
Please note that if any road section information is updated, a new application will be submitted for review.
WYDOT recommends that any new users or users update their accounts. Before the winter; Applications may take longer to process during winter storms.
Travel permits will not be issued during each road closure. Final authority to permit passage beyond highway closure gates rests with the Wyoming Highway Patrol. WATs or RCAs may be canceled at any time due to changing circumstances or other hazards.
