WEST MICHIGAN – All eyes at the FOX 17 Weather Center are on a system expected to move into West Michigan on Wednesday. This system will bring a mix of rain, freezing rain, snow and gusty winds. As for travel impacts, slick roads are possible overnight Wednesday and into Thursday morning. However, precipitation and snow accumulation all come down to temperature. Even if the temperature changes by just a few degrees, it can make a big difference when it comes to snow and slippery roads.
Forecast models predict the system will move toward southwest Michigan on Tuesday. Initially, the rain early Wednesday will be limited to mainly rain. Wednesday morning commutes will be fine except for slick areas near I-96 with minimal rain potential.

Skies will dry out mid-day Wednesday before the biggest burst of moisture develops Wednesday night. Heavy rain will develop after 8:00 PM Wednesday, becoming sleet and snow.

Thursday morning commutes could be more affected as cooler air moves in. The region near I-96 will likely be where the transition occurs, meaning freezing rain and showers are more likely. Freezing rain and snow can produce black ice on roads, especially near the ground when the temperature is below freezing. Skies will dry out again by mid-day Thursday before snow showers clear overnight Thursday and Friday.

In addition to a mix of rain, sleet and snow… wind gusts will also be strong! Wind gusts up to 40 mph are possible Wednesday and Thursday. This makes traveling more challenging.

In general, take your time when navigating this system. Below is a list of a few major highways in West Michigan between Wednesday and Thursday.
The greatest travel impact will be on US-131 north of Plainwell and on I-96 between Muskegon and Lansing.
