A proposal to increase health insurance premiums for public workers has sparked a flurry of activity this summer in the New Jersey Legislature, and lawmakers from both parties are now pushing for reforms to the state’s public sector health benefit programs.
Rates could rise as much as 24% on some state and local government health plans in the coming year, and New Jersey school employees could see premiums climb by more than 15%, according to rate renewal reports from the New Jersey Department of Treasury.
State health boards were set to approve the increases on July 25, but the vote was postponed after a public backlash from local governments, labor leaders and state lawmakers from both parties. A new date for the meeting still hasn’t been scheduled.
