Polestar: Its most EV buyers for the tech, not the environment

More Americans are buying. More than 5% of the new cars Americans bought last quarter had a battery instead of a gas tank.

Surprisingly, it’s not about the area. It’s about big screens.

At least, that’s what a study by electric automaker Polestar found.

Polestar was once a tuning shop known for creating high-performance versions of Volvo cars. It still does some work, but the company now produces its own electric cars. Its best-selling product, the Polestar 2, is a mid-size luxury EV characterized by a strong look and extensive use of durable materials.

The company surveyed 5,086 American drivers who own electric or gasoline-powered cars to determine “electric car acceptance, infrastructure, and perceptions of electric car brands when purchasing a vehicle.”

Some of the results were surprising. For example, 55% of those who switched to electric cars does not List environmental issues as the main reason for the switch.

Why did they change? In-vehicle technology and data management systems were the main reason.

“The idea that luxury is defined by what’s ‘under the hood’ has changed in the electric age with a priority of seamless connectivity, integration with the current digital ecosystem and good UX design,” said Gregor Hembrow, head of Polestar North America.

Younger drivers have more trust in new EV-only brands, the study found. 57% of Millennials (aged 25 to 40) described themselves as “trusting new electric car brands” compared to only 28% of Baby Boomers (aged 57 to 75).
