Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg traveled on official White House business with his wife, Chasten Buttigieg, the Fox News host’s latest scandal to be pushed into the right-wing media.
Last April, Buttigieg led the White House delegation to the Invictus Games in the Netherlands. The Invictus Games is an international sporting event that supports wounded service members and veterans. Buttigieg, her husband and the rest of the delegation traveled to the games on a military plane.
“Pete Buttigieg brought husband Chasten on military plane to attend Dutch sports event,” reported a headline on Fox News earlier this week, eight months after the story broke.
Others on the right were outraged when they heard about it and focused on Buttigieg traveling with her husband.
Right-wing news channel Breitbart In last Wednesday’s story, he demanded to know if Buttigieg had “reimbursed the government for her husband’s travel expenses.”
Buttigieg “took Chastain on a military plane to attend a sporting event in Europe…with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. Tom Price quit for less.” GOP strategist Matt Whitlock complained.
“Your holiday flights have been delayed or canceled but Pete Buttigieg brought his wife on a military plane to attend a sporting event in the Netherlands.” Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) complained to press secretary Abigail Maro..
Fox’s Brett Baier asked Buttigieg about it last night: “You brought your husband Chasten on a military plane to attend this sporting event in the Netherlands. Has the money been returned? “
“Of course not,” Buttigieg replied innocently. “I led a presidential delegation to support America’s wounded warriors and injured service members at the Evictus Games.”
“It was one of the greatest honors I’ve ever had in this job.”
“And the diplomatic protocol on presidential delegations is that the principal is usually accompanied by his spouse.”
He explained that he met the wounded servicemen from Ukraine and immediately met with the Dutch authorities after their return.
He then pointed out that during the Trump administration, then-Army Secretary Mark Esper went to the Invictus Games with his wife, and Donald Trump went with Melania Trump one year. During the Obama administration, Michelle Obama went with Barack Obama.
“The question in my mind is, if no one is questioning why writer Esper and his wife led the delegation – and they should have – why was it different when it was my wife and I?” That’s what it says.

The White House said in a statement that it is standard practice for military aircraft to be assigned to cabinet-level presidential delegations.
