The new production line facility is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and has a storage capacity of 500 tons of wheat, creating 14 additional jobs. This further strengthens PepsiCo’s role and contribution in local communities.

Product demand is growing.

“Pepsico decided to invest in this new product line as consumer trends show a desire for healthy, convenient, minimally processed and varied food products with a special focus on increasing production. Technology is increasing the efficiency and safety of production processes,” said Hopewell, Manufacturing Plant Manager at the Wet-Bix facility. Hloff said.

The company’s Whit-Bix is a low-sugar product that has few ingredients and uses only minimally processed whole-grain wheat. PepsiCo said Wet-Bix volumes are expected to “accelerate the product’s health credentials and value proposition in the ready-to-eat cereal category.”

The new production line is needed for Weet-Bix innovation to develop more focus and capacity for future growth into new formats.

A further R60m was spent upgrading the company’s Malmesbury Mill, which is the only source of the special sterile wheat needed to produce Wit-Bix. The expansion of the mill allows for a number of years of wheat supply and ensures easy process control in the Weet-Bix brewing process.

PepsiCo’s acquisition of Pioneer Foods in 2020 was approved by the Competition Tribunal on the basis of several public interest covenants. Investments in Weet-Bix’s value chain improvements will form part of a committed R6.5bn capital expenditure investment.

Top selling breakfast cereal

Wet-Bix was first introduced in South Africa in 1930 and is still made today using the same recipe.

“Weet-Bix is the number one selling breakfast cereal in South Africa and has been a pride of place on the South African breakfast table for generations. This investment is timely as we move towards a safer, more efficient and sustainable food system. Tumi Matsheka, VP Supply Chain at PepsiCo SSA, is part of our commitment to invest in our operations.

This investment is strongly aligned with PepsiCo Positive – a sustainable end-to-end strategic transformation of how the company creates growth and value by working across planetary boundaries and driving positive change for the planet and people.

In addition to addressing global threats to the food system and achieving technologically sustainable production, strategies for redressing global food inequality and increasing access to quality nutrition for all must be built into the system.

Renewable energy improvements

In addition to the new production line, the Wit-Bix facility is equipped with solar panels, and “from this facility alone, we have the capacity to generate 1.8 million kilowatts of electricity annually. By 2030, we plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 75 percent from 2015 baselines, and This milestone brings us one step closer, explains Matsheka.

“We are confident that PepsiCo will directly link the future of our business to the future of our planet. It’s a win-win. We’re making sure we offer the same great taste and nutritious options consumers want. Our journey is full of opportunities as we provide consumers with positive choices that help build a sustainable future. “We should have,” Matsheka said.
