Four-time US Open winner John McEnroe has said it would be “a joke” if Novak Djokovic misses the final Grand Slam of the year later this month because of his Covid vaccination status.
Djokovic refused to take the vaccine, apparently due to current US law requiring travelers to show full proof of vaccination to board flights to the United States.
The Serbian previously said he was prepared to skip Grand Slam tournaments where participating players must be vaccinated against Covid. Djokovic is currently on the entry list for the tournament in New York from August 29 to September 11.

“I don’t think it’s fair,” McEnroe told reporters on Tuesday. “I think it’s a joke.”
If I had taken the vaccine I would have gone and played but he has very strong beliefs and you have to respect that.
“At this point, we’re two and a half years into the pandemic, I think people in all parts of the world are more aware of this, and the idea that he can’t travel here to play here, I’m a joke.”
Djokovic failed to defend his Australian Open crown this year after being kicked out of the country due to his vaccination status in January.

Rafa Nadal has won his 21st major title from Djokovic and Roger Federer in Melbourne. Nadal then added another Grand Slam title to his tally at the French Open, moving him ahead of Djokovic, who won Wimbledon last month.
When asked if Djokovic’s absence from major tournaments is affecting his chances of finishing ahead of his rivals in terms of Grand Slam victories, McEnroe said, “That’s a question we all want to know the answer to.”
“Obviously, Rafa Nadal has benefited from that. If a guy wins the Australian Open eight or nine times, (Djokovic gushed), you kind of think the odds.”
“These three guys are already the best. Rafa managed to achieve a miraculous victory in Australia that many people did not expect. Novak arrived at Wimbledon and then Rafa got injured.”
