Millennium space systemsA Boeing (NYSE: BA ) company, has demonstrated many new technologies – both expected and unexpected – in its orbit. Red eye smallsat constellation. b DARPAThe satellite has been given the nickname “RED-EYE” for its bright red appearance.Remove before flight“A cover used to keep the payload clean – the purpose of this mini-sat was to demonstrate new avionics, communications equipment, on-board processors and terminations.”
Red-Eye managed to control the constellation’s orbital space through an airborne drag module and management in Leo. If the satellites needed to converge for a crosswalk, for example, the Millennium team developed a simple method to simultaneously control the airfoil’s drag to control the constellation’s spacing.
The team took space and ground-based automation a step further, allowing the constellation to essentially control its orbital space itself. Designed for an orbital mission life of nine months, the miniatures continue to operate today without degradation.
The program is demonstrating multipath-connections in orbit, paving the way for networked constellations of smaller satellites. Different communication layers can serve different functions – resilience and multiple parallel missions – that can be used for multiple domains. The RED-EYE contract ends in December 2021 and the first satellite is decommissioned in June 2022. The satellites will be launched from the ISS in 2019 and 2020.
“Satellite maneuvering isn’t always an option – since we launched from the International Space Station, we had to make sure our space vehicles were safe for astronauts. He said Doug Halsey, RED-EYE Program Manager, Millennium Space Systems. “IInstead, we used a new approach to orbital space that allowed us to control a constellation of satellites and operate our unmanned displays.“
“Millennium is known for wringing everything possible out of small sats, and this one was no differentHe said Jason KimCEO of Millennium Space Systems. “Red-Eye has demonstrated what is possible when it comes to small satellite constellations and enhancing resilience. And we are demonstrating it in a cost and schedule efficient manner on the orbit.. RED-EYE is also performing real-time processing on board. Downloading data from the satellite can take a long time. If we can process raw data across the board and downgrade only the data we want to learn, we can improve the latency of the system to deliver that data to users. He said.
Millennium Space Systems, a Boeing company, provides high-performance prototype and constellation solutions for advanced national security and environmental protection missions. In the year Founded in 2001, the company’s small satellite missions support government, civil and commercial space customers in orbit.
