ESCANABA — The NorthCare Network, in conjunction with the Delta County Veterans Service Office and the Delta County Veterans Council are offering a free class to veterans, family members, veteran caregivers, and community members on Mental Health First Aid. Below are some of the important reasons you or someone you know should take this class. We are losing too many veterans due to mental illness throughout the nation. This course could possibly help you get the time needed for emergency responders to arrive or to obtain professional treatment.
– People who enroll in local Mental Health First Aid courses learn a five-step action plan to help loved ones, colleagues, neighbors and others cope with mental health or substance use problems.
– You will be certified in Mental Health First Aid for 3 years. Similar to traditional CPR/First Aid courses.
– Also similar to traditional First Aid and CPR, Mental Health First Aid is help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a crisis until professional treatment is obtained or the crisis resolves.
– Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based public education and prevention tool – it improves the public’s knowledge of mental health and substance use problems and connects people with care for their mental health or substance use problems.
The class is on Wednesday, October 12 at the Delta County Veterans Service Office (Delta County Service Center – 2840A College Ave. Escanaba) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The class is free and pizza/water/soda will be provided for lunch.
