The horses will return to Makakin Island for the coming season
The return of the horses to Makinak Island is a sure sign that the spring and tourist season is near. More than 500 horses spend their summer there.

Travel + Entertainment magazine on Tuesday named the national symbol of Lake Huron in the continental US as the best island in the 2022 World Awards.
Visitors use bicycles and horses and carts, no cars. Activities range from running around the island to swimming in crystal clear water.
Sitting on the porch of a hotel with a cocktail or sampling a homemade fridge is known for creating lasting memories. Small bands lead to the evening dance and the scents of flowers fill the air.
“I’m really, really happy,” Mayor Margaret Dude told the Free Press. “Everyone is working hard to keep Makina clean. It shows that if we work together on the island, we will be rewarded as a team. I am very grateful for this award.”
The unique atmosphere of the historic space began with old Hollywood, including the films of Esther Williams, as well as the classic “Somewhere in Time” with Christopher Rev and Jane Seymour.
“It’s important to preserve history and the environment,” Dud said. “We have to remember that.”
Tradition, loneliness

The island of Makina was previously mentioned by TripAdvisor and Conde Nast Traveler.

This is the first season of the island’s season without Victor Calwart, owner of the Riba Fuji store. His son Todd continues to inherit the island.
“We’re working hard,” Todd Calwart told the Free Press. “We are humiliated by the award. I think it will be very useful for us in the fall.”
