On our way to our hotel in the afternoon, we drove to the West End on the narrow streets leading to Blackfreeers — oh, those old English names! —The driver and the American passengers had a short conversation. I’m happy to be back in London. I’m glad I came back. Old Friends Week, right?
Exactly. My recent trip to London reminded me of how expensive travel traditions are, each with its own unique discoveries. Most of the time, when I move to a new location, I plan to travel in the lap I know.
That night in London, I remember St. Paul Amber playing on the window sill at my favorite restaurant, across the Thames, in the night sun, on our plate, and in the corner of Dandi Jazz Duo. Peter Allen’s song “All That Jazz”, “The old thing is new again.”
My companion’s eyes lit up with surprise. የመጀመሪያ Her first time in England; I have not been here for three years. The restaurant is overjoyed, with diners, waiters and cooks. The food was close to the divine, imagined and perfectly prepared. If experiences are diamonds (and they are) it will be bright tonight in the 10-carat at Oxso Tower Brassry. For the first time in over two years on my overseas trip, in April, old things were really new – new, that is, like annual holidays, holidays and birthdays.
I have lived in 60 countries, four continents around the world, but Europe has always been very supportive. London is the world’s economic and cultural capital, and the world’s largest city destination. We spent five days here in Thames; Every day, Odyssey was among the gems of London.
In the British Museum, a large new gallery space showcases modern indigenous cultures around the world. In the Museum of Natural History, the image of a gorilla was a photograph of a winning wild animal from around the world.
At Hyde Park, the Bulldog Oscar had tea and biscuits in the sun at Diana Memorial with a couple of friends from around the world. We heard a prayer service at the Royal Albert Hall, the venue for the World Premier Concert, and a thousand songs sung by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins.
Tubes took us everywhere without any problems. Support staff still answer questions, solve problems, and make transportation easier for everyone. And that famous melody, the great British voice, reminded us of the best bite in the world hundreds of times to “think of the gap”.
Finally, but surely, in the small warehouse theater, we saw a production of “Henry V” jaws starring Keith Harrington. Yes, John Snow’s long three-month run from the “Game of Thrones” has been on sale for a long time, but our wonderful friends have got second-row seats on the front desk of the same amazing Bankside Hotel. The drama is that there is no Shakespeare production that I have never seen before, and it will remain in my mind for the rest of my life.

Is London Theater the Best? Yes, but that’s not what I’m celebrating. The London Theater is still there and still is great. My favorite hotel is still right there, and full of very talented angels. After 15 months of closure, my favorite restaurant is not as good as it used to be, it’s better. The British Museum is undergoing a bit of a renaissance, and Tube remains the best city transportation system.
All this… now.

I live on a beautiful small farm on a remote island north of Seattle, and I love it. Even so, by 2020, I had not left the island for more than seven months, and I felt like a dead stick in the mud.
But at the beginning of April, there was even more soothing, cell-sized joy in London. I will not try to convince you that London is the best. I appreciate the comforting meaning of it all. You will probably look at Omaha, Nebraska, or Sarasota, Florida, or Montana as much as He did Park Hyde, Tube, and West End. Go there with your favorites. Touch it, taste it, hear it, love it. We live in a wonderful world of millions of wonderful places and people.
Not just bright lights and a big city. After this summer, I drive 12 hours to a remote western park, easily spotted in a hot spring, and watch the night star rise above the sage. I was there almost a quarter of a century. Getting to almost all of London’s mountainous terrain is the joke of modern life.
I still want to see new suns and lands and walk new streets full of new faces. But I equally love the well-known and loved and long life that has brought me these opportunities to find what I love and cherish physically, over and over again.
It is a troubled world, true; But dreams can come true again, and the old is new.
