Going to college It can be expensive. Between education, tuition and beer, there isn’t always much wiggle room in the budget. Throw in pandemic-related expenses and rising inflation, and you may be wondering how to manage your money.
One way to stretch those dollars further is by taking advantage of student discounts. A valid .edu email address can save you a lot of academic trouble, with a little left over for a great show or cheap meal delivery. We’ve compiled some of our favorite student deals below.

In Good Olds, it was easy to cheat your way into student discounts. After a Google search, you can photoshop a student ID or grab a fake email address for $5. But thanks to third-party verification services, it’s now impossible (and in some cases illegal) to find and use a fake qualified email.
We do not recommend trying to get a student email address if you are not actually a student. (Consider signing up for our Deals newsletter instead!) But some educational deals can be taken advantage of by teachers, parents of students, or alumni. Sometimes getting a student discount is as easy as checking the code sent to your email from the retailer. You may also need to sign up for a free third-party service that retailers use to verify your registration.

Once verified, you can use student discounts on the Unidays website or when prompted at stores that use your Unidays account as a verification method. The Apple Education Discount offers a total of 10 percent off to students, their parents, and teachers. Sweeten up the fall deals by throwing in free AirPods with the purchase of a MacBook. You can also save on services like AppleCare+.
Student discounts are available to students and parents of students. Best Buy changes its special offers frequently, and there are often additional deals, such as discounted video games, microwaves, or PC accessories. See all current promotions here.
The Dell University Store offers a variety of discounts for people with .edu email addresses. Some Dell University coupon codes can be stacked with other Dell deals to save even more. Most stores don’t allow coupon stacking, which makes these deals a little more attractive.
Sign up for HP Education offers by verifying your .edu email address. HP says eligible consumers can save up to 77 percent off select products.
Lenovo changes its discounts regularly, but typically, students and teachers can get a 10 percent discount. It has also offered bonuses like free Uber vouchers for spending a certain amount. Accounts are free and verified through ID Me.
Get 25 percent off Logitech by verifying your email through Unides.
Microsoft is offering up to 10 percent off a variety of products, including Surface devices and accessories. Both parents and students are eligible.
Samsung’s program is for students, parents and teachers, where you can get up to 30 percent off laptops, tablets, phones and other gadgets. Additional offers include free Galaxy Buds with the purchase of select devices and various discount packages.

Thanks to that sweet sweet institution inbox, the services you use every day could be cheaper. Registering for the first time? Insurance providers sometimes offer student benefits.
Students can get a free six-month trial of Amazon Prime (usually limited to one month.) After the trial ends, students will be billed $7.49 per month instead of the usual $14. Prime Student includes a few special benefits, such as textbook rentals, free access to GrubHub Student+, and discounted meditation app memberships.
Apple Music usually costs $10 per month. Students pay $6. An Apple Music student subscription includes Apple TV+. Your eligibility will be verified through Unidays.
Instead of the usual $6 monthly cost, students can get Hulu’s ad-supported plan for $2 a month. If you want to access Hulu but not Spotify, this is the best option.
Spotify Premium Student costs $5 per month, which is a 50 percent discount. It also includes the Hulu version with commercials and showtime. If you love your TV, this is one of the best student deals around, especially if you’re already paying $6 a month for Hulu or $11 a month for Watch Time.
Students can get 50 percent off a variety of Tidal premium music streaming memberships. The discount is available not only to those enrolled in higher education, but also to secondary school students.
Unlimited plans are discounted up to $25 per month for college students. As usual with cell phone carriers, terms and conditions apply, but it’s worth checking if you’re a Verizon customer (or considering switching).
Normally, YouTube Premium costs $12 per month, but the price drops to $7 for students. The membership includes both ad-free YouTube videos and ad-free YouTube music. There’s a one-month free trial if you’re interested in trying it out.

Whether your major requires an expensive software download or your homework can be made easier with some advanced tools, students can save on tons of tools and website memberships.
Eligible students, parents and teachers will receive 40 percent off Ableton Live or apply the same percentage on the Push Package Live. This software is especially attractive to music creators, although if you’re planning to upload some fun projects to SoundCloud, it might be useful for you as well. You don’t need to be a music major to take advantage of the offer. Check out our guide to learning music online for more tips.
Adobe Creative Cloud includes over 20 apps including Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro, Lightroom and more. It’s usually $55 a month. Students and teachers can earn $20 per month. A year later, the $20 price has risen to $30, but it’s still a good deal if you can’t get the essential Adobe apps any other way.
This bundle includes licenses for Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, and more. It is designed for video and music creators and costs $200. Considering that Final Cut Pro retails for $300 on its own, this package is a worthwhile purchase if you plan to purchase one of these software licenses individually.
This is a great deal on one of the best password managers.
If you’re interested in productivity tools, Evernote is a favorite. A valid .edu email address gets you 50 percent off a one-year membership.
Thought is similar to Evernote or Google Keep. It’s handy for everything from creating job lists to building specifications and other documents. Notion’s Personal Pro plan usually costs $5 a month or $48 a year, but it’s free for students and teachers. It remains free as long as you don’t have a university-related email address. This plan is similar to the free personal version with the added benefits of unlimited file uploads, unlimited guest additions, and a 30-day version history.
This GitHub freebie contains both free and discounted apps, services, software downloads, and additional developer tools. There are more than 100 options, from a free one-year subscription to Canva Pro to six months of Dashlane to Stripe marketing fees and access to GitHub Pro. You don’t need to use all of them. You need to be a registered student to get the package.
Students and teachers can use a valid .edu email address to access Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Teams for free. Microsoft says the offer is for people at eligible institutions, but the criteria for an eligible institution appears to be too broad. There are free alternatives to Microsoft Office products, but if you insist on writing essays in Word, this is worth checking out.
Prezi offers tools for perfecting digital presentations. It can be integrated with Zoom, Google Meet and more. The service has two education premium plans for students and teachers that cost $3 or $5 per month ($5 or $15 per month, respectively).
You need a valid .edu email address for this. If funds are particularly tight, you can also apply for a free one-year membership. SkillShare offers classes in graphic design, journalism, photography, business marketing, and more.

If you need some retail therapy (or want to upgrade your bedroom on the cheap), many non-tech stores offer student discounts. Some of the highlights are discussed below.
Bring your student ID to the box office to get a discounted rate. Discounts vary by location, so check with your local theater for more information.
Amtrak offers a national student discount for students ages 17 to 24.
Unides is the best way to find fashion retailers with student discounts. A few athletic and outdoor stores are also listed, so even if you don’t need grown-up job interview clothes, this can be a great way to save on sports gear and other gear for your extracurricular activities.
Greyhound offers a 15 percent discount to students through a third-party service called Student Advantage, which also offers discounts on other dining and travel services.
Discounts on magazine and newspaper subscriptions
We’re biased, but a year of print and unlimited digital access to WIRED costs $5 a year for students and teachers. Students can also save on subscriptions. Economist, New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Atlantic, Bloomberg, more. If there is a magazine or newspaper you read frequently, you may receive a discount when you subscribe.
Museums, Aquariums, Zoos and other places
Most museums have student discounts on admission. The same goes for your local zoo, aquarium or aquarium. Nothing beats cheap weekend fun!
