According to the press release, the list of African businesswomen running large businesses is not based on such quantitative research. The list is unique in that the information provided by Bloomberg is based on data-driven research.
“This year’s list of 93 women represents 17 countries with either a large income or a large market capitalization. The list includes 40 women from South Africa, 12 from Nigeria, and 6 from Egypt, Ghana and Kenya respectively,” said Teresa Clarke, Chairperson of Africa.com.
Africa.com analyzed 2,020 companies listed on 24 African stock exchanges. Out of 2,020 companies, Africa.com has screened companies with revenues of $100 million or more or companies with a market capitalization of $150 million or more and presented a list of 787 companies.
Group method
The public websites of 787 companies were examined to identify female C-suite executives. The team then screened each woman to determine whether they held the title of CEO or managing director or president, and conducted an assessment to ensure that these executives were responsible for the companies’ bottom line, profit and loss. This resulted in 40 female CEOs in Group 1.
The methodology for Group 2 is similar to the methodology for Group 1, except that the entities evaluated are divisions of the 787 companies that themselves have revenues of $100 million or more. Women who lead these departments should have a title that clearly shows that they are the chief executive responsible for profit and loss. This analysis yielded 28 women’s department heads.
Group 3 began by analyzing multinational corporations with revenues of more than $10 billion operating in one or more countries on the African continent. The regional heads of these companies are analyzed to identify female executives for the African region or African country, which is responsible for the country or region’s profits and losses. This analysis gave 25 women. Women in this group are prioritized over those who lead an African country rather than those who lead an African region.
Those three teams make up the final roster of 93 women.
