Residents in some of Sydney’s wealthiest suburbs, including the vicinity of Bondi Beach, will be closed for at least another week when Covid-19 stretches into Australia’s most populous city.

The state health department revealed on Friday that it had been notified of 11 overnight locally acquired cases in New South Wales, after 11 infections 24 hours to 20 hours a day earlier.

NSW Health said 65 cases were related to a cluster in Bondi. Authorities said earlier that the latest outbreak, which represents the first infections in the state in more than a month, was associated with a driver carrying aircrews abroad and had visited several Sydney sites, including a shopping center in Bondi.

This has motivated the state to reintroduce masked clothing into indoor situations, but it also poses a broader policy issue for leaders, as Australia has one of the least vaccinated populations in the world.

Affected residents can only leave home for essential activities or services. Several other areas of the city are already subject to blockade and residents are banned from traveling outside the metropolitan city of Sydney for non-essential reasons.

NSW, a state of nearly 8.2 million people (more than 5.3 million of whom live in Sydney), has confirmed 5,507 cases of coronavirus since the start of the pandemic and 56 related deaths. This week, New Zealand stopped its travel bubble with the state, which had exempted travelers from spending a mandatory hotel quarantine.

Although Australia was one of the countries that last year achieved a good result in keeping coronavirus outbreaks small and contained, vaccination has been slow.

Second, only 4.4% of the population is completely vaccinated the FT tracker, at a time when the most transmissible variants of Covid-19 are spreading around the world.
