In the midst of flight cancellations, staff shortages, pilot strikes and rising gas prices, this is not a good time to fly now, even if you don’t know how to fill your food with holiday pictures. To make the trip even more hell this summer, airlines are packing luggage at an unprecedented price.

According to a recent Air Travel Consumer Report, about 220,000 bags were misappropriated in the United States in April, an increase of 135 percent from last year’s 94,000. In addition, hundreds of wheelchairs and scooters were misappropriated, and essential items such as medicine, car seats, and carts were lost for weeks.

The Internet is full of scary stories of lost luggage. I lost my luggage to Air Canada Twitter account. Shocking images at London’s Heathrow Airport show hundreds of misplaced and unsolicited bags (the airport announced today that it will limit passengers to 100,000 per day). According to Insider, a man bought a plane ticket just to check into the luggage compartment of Dublin Airport.

One more reason to consider road trips this summer.
