Chicagoland commuters should expect more headaches than usual when traveling on the Kennedy Expressway as a three-year construction project begins Monday night.
Work is scheduled to begin Monday at 10 a.m. on 7.5 miles of the highway and continue through the summer. The entire project is expected to be completed by 2025.
For the first round, two inbound left lanes will be closed until July, while the right inbound lanes will be closed for improvements.
The Illinois Department of Transportation says major delays are expected for commuters entering the city starting Tuesday morning. More than 275,000 vehicles travel on the road every day.
Transportation officials are advising commuters to find alternate travel routes or adjust their hours of operation. Metra has revised its schedule on the UP Northwest Line starting April 3, aligning 12 trains to weekday service.
Express lanes on the Kennedy Expressway will be allocated to southbound traffic to ease the burden of the project.
Bridges on the expressway will be demolished and replaced during the project, which will take about five weeks per bridge, IDOT said.
Construction of the Kennedy Expressway will affect Chicago transit for the next three winters.

Major roads leading to the expressway may be backed up due to construction, but exits and ramps are not expected to be closed.
For the next two winters, construction of northbound and express lines is planned.
Tuesday is forecast to be cloudy with minimal temperatures. Some gusts of up to 20 mph are expected, according to the National Weather Service.
