Buckhannon — Buckhannon American Legion Post 7 invites veterans from all over to learn about a program offered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs on Tuesday, Aug. 2.
Members of the Lewis V. Johnson VA Mobile Office of Clarksburg came to Post 7, located at 16 South Kanawha Street, to provide information about the Veterans Transportation Program (VTP). VTP provides travel solutions to VA healthcare facilities. This program provides these services at little or no cost to eligible veterans through Beneficiary Travel (BT), Veterans Transportation Services (VTS), and Senior Rural Transportation Grants (HRTG).
The Beneficiary Travel Program reimburses eligible veterans for expenses incurred while traveling to VA health care facilities. The BT program can provide pre-approved transportation solutions and arrange Special Mode Transportation (SMT) at VA’s request. Veterans may qualify for common carrier transportation (such as bus, taxi, airline, or train) under certain circumstances. VTS is a free service that provides safe and reliable transportation to veterans who need assistance traveling to VA health care facilities and non-VA health care appointments. VTS also works in partnership with service providers in local communities to meet the transportation needs of veterans. Veterans who are eligible for VA health care benefits and have a VA-approved appointment are eligible for transportation through the VTS program based on availability and guidelines at the local facility. Each local VA approved facility has driving guidelines based on their abilities. The local VA is located at 1 Medical Center Drive in Clarksburg. Substantial rural transportation assistance is provided to Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs) and state military service agencies. The grants provide transportation to veterans seeking VA and non-VA approved care in highly rural areas. These grants are available in counties with fewer than seven people per square mile. There are currently no eligible counties in West Virginia.
Veterans from near and far, some from Charleston, W.Va. Coming closer, they were present at the conclusion. Many local veterans will help with the information shared.
