Ian may affect Florida travel, airports and airlines this week.

Tropical Storm Ian is currently brewing in the western Caribbean on Sunday and is expected to soon become a hurricane – some forecasters say it could be a Category 3 – and is bearing down on the state of Florida.

All of Florida, mind you, which means some of the biggest tourist destinations in the country, could affect travel, including car trips, flights and cruises.

The storm is forecast to make landfall in Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and Cuba as it sweeps through the Gulf of Mexico, with its sights set on the west coast of Florida.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has already declared a state of emergency for all of Florida, not just travel along the coast from the Keys, Fort Myers, Sarasota, Tampa and up to the Panhandle. That’s because some models of Ian predict 450 miles from one side of the storm to the other. That also affects popular destinations, excluding large population centers, including Orlando and Florida’s east coast, as well as the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area.

According to aviation website The Point Guy, American, Delta and United Airlines are among the carriers that offer travel alerts and may follow instructions on how to change or cancel flights, and certainly offer waivers on change fees.

Also, according to TPG, flights from Owen Roberts International Airport in Grand Cayman will be canceled today (September 25, 2007).

“We are closely monitoring Tropical Storm Ian, which is expected to affect parts of the Caribbean and Florida. The safety of our customers and crew members is the airline’s No. 1 priority, and the team remains in touch with those affected. In a statement to FOX 35 News in Florida, he said: A travel warning has been issued to provide additional flexibility for customers affected by Tropical Storm Ian.

Cruise lines are adjusting itineraries as they deal with Hurricane Fiona, which has battered the eastern Caribbean islands and headed all the way north to Canada.
