Devi Vishwakumar’s colorful print-mix has become a trend among fans of Netflix’s “Never Never”. Costume designer Salvador Perez told POPSUGAR that he calls her look “fashionable in an unfashionable way,” meaning she owns her sense of style without worrying about luxury.
“We kept her printed pants and oversized cardigan a little fun and flirty.”
Devi, played by Maitrey Ramakrishnan, is known for his striking ’90s-inspired sense of style. She wore everything from multi-colored free men’s cardigans to plaid urban trousers paired with combat boots. It’s an aesthetic based on show creator Mindy Kaling’s style during her teenage years in Sherman Oaks, CA, Perez said.
But when season three was announced, Perez was busy designing for “Hocus Pocus 2” and handed over the reins to his former assistant Glinda Suarez, who was Kaling’s personal client for “The Mindy Project.” Suarez, who has worked with the “NHIE” outfit since the first season, made a smooth transition by playing Perez’s approach and further enhancing the series’ outfits.
“Salvador is a tough act to follow, so there were some nerves for the third season, but he set me up for success,” she told POPSUGAR in an email.
“Davy was a bit bright,” Suarez teased of the protagonist’s new season confidence. “She’s a junior now and finally has the boyfriend she’s been dreaming of since freshman year. Although we kept her printed pants and oversized cardigan, we started the season with a body-con dress, making it a little fun and flirty. The beginning of ‘Daxton.’ As a new Indian heartthrob we have added some low necklines.
