Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-serving monarch, passed away peacefully at Balmoral on September 8, 2022. According to protocol, this means the UK enters an official period of mourning that lasts up to seven days after the Queen’s funeral. – 17 days in total.
During this period, and beyond, many London-based events can be canceled as a mark of respect, with the Queen’s funeral and the coronation of the new King being recognized as national holidays. But what about London Fashion Week, which is right in the middle of a period of national mourning?
Will London Fashion Week go ahead?
The British Fashion Council (BFC) has confirmed that London Fashion Week will go ahead as planned, despite being severely curtailed.
Shortly after hearing of the Queen’s death, the BFC released the following statement:
London Fashion Week is a business-to-business event, and it’s an important time for designers to show their collections at a specific moment in the fashion calendar, during which we recognize the work that goes into it.
“Therefore, collections shows and presentations can continue, but we ask designers to respect the mood of the country and the time of national mourning, taking into account the time when they release their images.”
Will London Fashion Week events be cancelled?
Burberry has announced that its SS23 show, originally planned for Saturday, September 17, will be canceled ‘as a mark of respect’. Raf Simmons’ show has also been cancelled.

The BFC has proposed that all performances on the day of the Queen’s funeral be rescheduled. The exact date of the funeral has yet to be confirmed, but it is expected to take place on Monday September 19 – which means rescheduling performances including Roxanda, Christopher Kane, Supriya Lele, Chopova Lowena, Sinead O’Dwyer and Chet. Any ‘non-essential’ events taking place during London Fashion Week, including parties, launches and openings, may also be postponed or canceled in accordance with BFC guidelines.
How did the fashion world react to the Queen’s death?
Tributes have poured in from all corners of the fashion world following the Queen’s passing. British brands including Burberry, Christopher Kane and Barbour took to social media to express their condolences and share stories, as did fashion icons Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell.
