High tech to Harvey B. The Gantt Center for African-American Arts and Culture is coming up big. After four years, the center’s digital art studio is open to the public. Center officials describe it as a creative lab, complete with tools and software that artists and others can use to unleash their creative juices. Digital art classes are also offered in the studio.
In addition to Friday’s grand ticketed festivities, on Saturday, everyone is welcome to experience the new studio and perform at the “Digital Arts Studio Community Opening Day: Figital Funk.” Activities are on tap for the community’s opening day – a time for more residents to explore the digital studio, create artwork and animated stories, view virtual galleries and learn about upcoming workshops. Martin McNeese, the centre’s director of technology and innovation, said the digital art studio was a much-needed addition.
“We want to be at the intersection of technology and art and we felt that having a place to learn to build community and allow creators to come and create work and express their ideas would be a good mix with the programs, exhibitions and initiatives that we currently have here. at the center,” said McNeese.
On Saturdays, a variety of activities will be held in the new digital art studio to give residents the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities, such as creating artwork and animated stories or viewing virtual galleries featuring works from the Gantt Center’s permanent collection. Community Day is Saturday from 10am to 6pm.

- 20 computers installed on them are equipped with the latest software in the digital studio for basic editing, graphic design, game design, animation and other services.
- Classes are offered regularly and are taught by highly qualified instructors.
- There is no fee to use the Digital Art Studio.
- The studio is seen as a way to make high-tech digital art tools accessible to all residents.
- Gantt officials see the digital art studio as a way to attract more people to the center who have never visited before.
