You might have missed it when it came out the other week, but Fashion Police Squad is a fun, colorful little arena shooter from the indie devs at Mopeful Games. In it you’re Sergeant Des, and with a sewing gun in hand you’re charged with uncovering a conspiracy of fashion crimes.
It might sound like an inane joke, but it had so many positive reviews that I had to give it a try: and I found a pretty dang good game that remained funny under the fashionable exterior. If you, like me, write this off only in appearance, then you are wrong.
The heart of the fashion police force is to switch between weapons. Your 2DYE4 is a dye gun for dyeing on bright colors and overdyed garments with high-energy jets, while the integrated sewing machine is a more effective assault rifle on sickly and baggy garments.
You match the weapon to enemy type on the fly, grabbing the most dangerous object first and working your way down. Like the best arena shooters, almost every dangerous area is a puzzle of skill and speed, where identifying hazards and knowing how to solve them is key. Fashion Police Squad’s clean motion mechanics line up with that.
You do that with your belt. By attaching the belt to objects around you, such as flagpoles, your officer can quickly swing from place to place. This allows you to deal with nasty enemies and avoid nasty attacks like explosive bags or fast enemies. (Bros in neon on scooters.) There’s something great about swinging a nasty enemy around as you blast them with a dripping-flame-thing.
He also has an honor kill, as the special meter fills up the gauntlet of shiny style, allowing him to fly in large areas, sometimes beating his favorite fashion sense into fashion criminals.
Will the joke stay funny? I didn’t finish it, but the fun, bright colors and energy of Fashion Police Team (FPS) are a welcome change from the muted tones used in most retro-style shooters. (whatever we call these)
You can get the Fashion Police team for $20 on Steam for 10% off until August 22nd.
