GREENE — A group of determined residents has revamped the town’s unique community festival after five years of absence.
Green Village Day, the first since 2017, begins Saturday at 7 a.m. with a community pancake breakfast at Androscoggin Grange No. 8. Activities include a parade, cow flop bingo, magic show, wife-carrying contest, chili and pie cookoff, and firemen.

Breakfast is $5 per person and the cookout has a $5 entry fee. Food, t-shirts and a community cookbook with recipes collected from local residents will be sold.
Plus, everything is free, said Julia Cody, a Green Village Day committee member.
“We just want good old-fashioned fun,” she said.
Village Day could not be implemented in 2018 and subsequent years due to very few volunteers willing to help organize it. Selectman John Soucy previously said committee members were simply burned out.
According to past organizer Sally Herbert, the festival began in the early 2000s. It was first mentioned in the Sun Journal in 2005 as a group of firefighters.

“I really want to give back to the community,” she said. “That’s why our motto this year is Small Town Roots Back Together. We brought that up, you know, after you hit me. We want to bring it all together.
The Green Village Day Committee consists of Coady, Rebecca Brooke, Bree Allard, Eric Fahrenkopf, Gerry Valentine and Board of Selectmen Representative Soucy.
Cody says he’s been putting in a lot of work reviving the festival with fewer people. They hope to elect some more committee members to help organize Green Village Day next year.
Mildred Furbush Rideout, a lifelong resident of Greene and a 1945 graduate of Lewiston High School, will be the parade’s grand marshal.
Local residents are invited to visit the Dick Chug Tot ‘n Chug Garden Railroad display at 23 Barrel Shop Road from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Green Village Day is open to everyone, not just Green residents, Coady said.
A brochure with a schedule of events is available on the city’s website or at several locations around the city, including the city office and library.
