GOP accuses Big Tech, Disney of creating hostile work environment for pregnant women by emphasizing abortion

LonelyHouse Oversight Committee Republicans are worried that some of the nation’s biggest tech companies are creating animosity by highlighting their willingness to pay for abortions for pregnant women.

Rep. Michael Cloud, R-Texas, sent a letter Wednesday to Google and Facebook parents, as well as Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery, about their decision to expand abortion coverage following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Rove. Wade.

“I’m concerned that major corporations are pressuring women to have babies instead of taking maternity leave from work,” Cloud told Fox News Digital. “Women should feel supported in their decisions to balance family and work.”

“If these companies are exploiting women under the guise of abortion, we have a big problem,” he added.

Cloud’s letters note that each company has responded to the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe by emphasizing or expanding their policies regarding abortion.

For example, Warner Bros. Discovery and Facebook’s parent company Meta have announced they will expand employee benefits and cover transportation costs for women seeking abortions, even if they are out of state.

Google went one step further by telling employees in a letter after it was decided that it was allowing employees to be transferred without having to provide an excuse. Meanwhile, Disney sent a memo to employees reiterating its commitment to providing abortion access, CNBC reported.

None of the companies emailed by Cloud returned requests for comment for this story.

Cloud said the emphasis on abortion instead of highlighting their paid leave policies creates the impression of an unfavorable work environment for pregnant women.

“Women face discrimination because of the number of days women are away from the workplace due to the birth and care of their children,” Cloud wrote. “They shouldn’t feel compelled to have an abortion instead of taking time off to have their baby, especially since women are giving birth to fewer babies than they want.”

Cloud wrote in a letter to the companies that federal law already prohibits employment discrimination based on pregnancy status. Despite being illegal, the Texas Republican noted that women in the workforce are still being pressured to choose between having children and their jobs.

“With historically high inflation, soaring gas prices and infant formula shortages, it’s imperative that women feel supported in their decisions to balance their families with their careers,” Cloud wrote.

The letters come as Republicans criticize corporate America and their push for policies they say have “reinvigorated” the nation’s leading tech companies.

Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has criticized DeSantis in recent months for opposing a state law barring teachers from discussing “sexual orientation” or “gender identity” with students under fourth grade.
