Every traveling golfer’s nightmare is now playing out en masse: their favorite golf clubs being left behind at the airport of departure on the way home.
Edinburgh Airport is now a quasi-club graveyard, the only thing bigger than the pile of bags in the left back are the pictures of the pile of bags in the left back. They are Twitter and Reddit. Mine for those photos right now.
Tour Pro was Mackenzie Hughes. One of the lucky ones. The family’s eight bags (including the clubs) did not arrive in Dublin after taking the express flight from Edinburgh, as you can see from the Twitter campaign to resolve the issue. Two GOLF.com staffers said their clubs either didn’t make it to Edinburgh or never made it back to the States. One of them has no clue where the clubs are.
It seems to be going both ways as golf clubs have been struggling to reach Scotland for weeks at the start. Tour guide Keith Mitchell has dealt with a major delay in the arrival of his clubs ahead of the Scottish Open. The bag took a completely different route to Scotland. They eventually arrived in time for some practice rounds, but Viktor Hovland wasn’t so lucky, and Ping’s staff had to create a new set of clubs for him.
Jonathan Vegas, who was traveling with his family, was less fortunate and had to play the first couple of rounds at the Renaissance Club without a bat. He played 72-68 to make the cut and eventually finished T36. After competing in the Scottish Open and missing out on the Open Championship, Justin Harding was eager to continue his season. Only his clubs are stuck in Edinburgh.
Apparently, the issue is rampant throughout the golf world. Broadcaster Shane Bacon’s sticks took their sweet time arriving in the UK and they arrived when a Good Samaritan follower spotted his name on his travel bag. He took them and brought them to Saint Andrew. Barstool’s Sam ‘Rigs’ Bozoian had his bag stuck at London Heathrow Airport and has been out of clubs ever since.
PackedA British website devoted to golf has been tracking the lost/delayed luggage story for a while and includes horror stories from some Challenge Tour golfers in Europe, so you can read it. They also arrived at Edinburgh Airport to seek an explanation of what had happened and received the following statement.
Although a large amount of baggage was expected, the amount of golf clubs that required processing was far greater than expected. This caused delays in the baggage handling system yesterday and teams worked with handling agents to resolve the issue.
“Steps have been taken to rectify the situation and while all bags have now been sorted, unfortunately some items will be delayed in reaching their final destination.
“We are working with agents and airlines to help repatriate bags with their owners. We thank passengers for their patience during this challenging time for the entire aviation industry and apologize for any inconvenience caused.”
How does this situation work itself out? Randomly, it seems. Up to this point, bags have gone missing, arrived at the wrong airports, been delayed, or been stuck at baggage claim for days. If you’re among the unlucky ones, remember that Jonathan Vegas made the decision without the clubs.
