GIF database GIF says GIFs are now ‘out of fashion’ and ‘for boomers’

If you spend a lot of time on social media, chances are you use a lot of GIFs during your conversations.. One of the companies that create GIFs – Giphy – has decided to follow its own product.

Giphy allows users to upload animated images and videos that can be anything – a scene from a movie or a real-life event. right now, GIFs seem to be going out of fashion, or at least according to Giphy.

Are GIFs history?

The company called GIFs “out of fashion” and said young users thought GIFs were “for adults” and “disturbing”. In addition, Giphy says content creators are “getting less value” in GIFs, noting that GIF uploads on the platform have declined over the past two years.

“There are signs that the overall use of GIFs is declining,” Giphy said in an August filing with the UK competition watchdog. Giphy says this is due to a “general decline in user and content partner interest in GIFs.”

Currently, the Competition and Markets Authority is trying to block Facebook’s parent company ( Meta ) from taking the company for $400 million. In its filings, Giphy stated that it had no meaningful revenue-generating business and was hoping that Meta GIFs would help generate revenue.

Indeed, Giphy wants to sell to Meta, although the CMA ordered Meta to sell Giphy in November 2021 to reduce competition among potential buyers. But Giphy says only Meta is interested in buying Giphy. Companies such as Amazon, Apple, Twitter and Snap have shown interest, but the discussions have not gone beyond “initial contacts”.
