Fewer Americans filed for unemployment last week as the labor market continued to grow despite the Federal Reserve’s efforts to slow the economy and curb inflation. According to the Labor Department, claims for unemployment in the US for the week ending March 11 fell by 20,000 to 192,000 from 212,000 in the previous week.

North Dakota’s unemployment rate rose slightly in January. The seasonally adjusted rate was 2.6 percent last month. That’s 2% in December and 2.9% in January 2022. According to the North Dakota Employment Service, the unemployed workforce totaled 10,601.

In Minnesota, leisure and hospitality continued to recover strongly from the pandemic, posting the largest growth (over 20,770 jobs) and outpacing the national pace (8.9% in MN, 8.3% in the US). This growth was led by double-digit percentage increases in arts, entertainment and recreation and lodging. By comparison, Minnesota’s manufacturing sector rose by 7,519 jobs (2.4%).

North Dakota’s eight commercial service airports handled a total of 88,152 air passengers in February. It showed an increase of 9 percent compared to the same month in 2022. North Dakota Aeronautics Executive Director Kyle Wanner said March is typically one of the busiest times of the year for air travel in North Dakota, as residents make their spring break plans. Passenger traffic at the Grand Forks airport increased slightly last month. Year-to-date travel is up 21% at GFK.

The City of Grand Forks has issued a building permit for My Salon Suites at The Grove Shopping Complex at 4088 South Washington. The permit would cost the project $634,000.

Ford is recalling more than 1.5 million vehicles in the U.S. in two measures to repair potentially broken brake hoses and windshield wiper arms. The large recall covers approximately 1.3 million 2013 through 2018 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKX midsize vehicles. The second recall covers more than 222,000 F-150s from 2021.

Honda is recalling half a million vehicles in the US and Canada because the front seat belts may not be working properly. The recall covers the 2017 to 2020 CR-V, the 2018 and 2019 Accord, the 2018 to 2020 Odyssey and the 2019 Insight. Also included is the Acura RDX from the 2019 and 2020 model years. Owners will be notified by letter Starting April 17th.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Polaris is recalling its Sport utility vehicles due to a fatal accident. When used, an improperly installed wiring harness can contact the brake line and/or the vehicle frame, causing loss of use of the front brakes and/or fire, resulting in fire and accident hazards.
