Ahead of his coronation next month, this week the first portrait of King Charles since the start of his reign was released.

In the picture, King is dressed in his signature blue pinstripe suit with a well-placed pocket square looming in the distance. So far, normal. Look closely, though, and you’ll see something unexpected for the king: beneath the watch sits a black braided bracelet with gold jewelry and red beads.

This indigenous bracelet was presented to him in February during a meeting with Domingo Ater, leader of the Achu community in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Ather was invited to meet King Charles at an event to discuss the implementation of the United Nations’ Global Biodiversity Plan.

Artist Alastair Barford is said to have added the bracelet to add “context and authenticity” and to symbolize Charles’ “advocacy on climate change and sustainability”.

But in choosing to display the bracelet in the portrait, the royal is reflecting a wider menswear trend. From A-listers to intern candidates, studded and studded bracelets on wrists have become a new, subtle social marker.

For Charles, this means his role as environmental king. He’s been promoting the benefits of biodiversity since the 1970s, so it’s only fitting that he wears a bracelet that represents his cause. Wearing a bracelet is his way of trying to fit in with the Eco Warriors while maintaining royal protocol with a shirt and tie.

So does a campaign without agitation. When he first took the throne, Charles reportedly had to tone down his public championing of eco issues. The bracelet allows him to express an opinion without saying a word.

While his souvenir ring represents tradition, these bro-celets suggest that he is trying to find a less conformist approach to life. On one level, he’s very “gap yah”, something like “yeah I spent some time finding myself in Thailand” akin to the way Skies’ Kendall Roy advises his siblings to “be water”.

But, instead of shopping after visiting the shrine, men are buying from designer boutiques and independent online stores and wearing them around town, to work, to the gym, to the pub. Where Bro goes, Bro-celt follows. Especially in the boardrooms of both bankers and the tech bros in Silicon Valley who see Bro-Cell as a Willy Power move, it ranks next to the Apple Watch.

It’s the same flex made by people in the public eye. Prince Harry, David Beckham, Harry Styles, Timothee Chalamet and Brad Pitt are all part of the bro-cel team, all of which fans of this subtle hint of rebellion can hide under their sleeves when needed. Many of these bracelets also have a philanthropic connection, which resonates well with wearers who choose to walk around the social issues surrounding capitalism. Billionaire Jeff Bezos has appeared in a trio of Warriors wraps, such as his Giving Bracelets, which support children’s charities. Unlike the celebratory wristbands that often leave you starving all summer long, the Bro-Celt is a well-thought-out accessory.

“It’s a very carefully planned purchase,” says Robert Tateosian, managing director of Teosian, which specializes in leather, macrame and beaded designs. Tatosian said his clients range from 18 to 80. “They don’t come in because they see a piece on a billboard or in a magazine. They are more on a journey of discovery,” says Tateossian. “Some men spend more than two hours in my store evaluating the best bracelet to buy with the sale or the best stack to build.”

While some may think this type of casual bracelet would clash with the formal attire worn by the likes of King Charles, the high-low mix is ​​all part of the appeal.
