Former Georgia Tech cornerback Trey Swilling signs with the 49ers Practice Squad

Former Georgia Tech cornerback Trey Wheeling has found a new home to continue his NFL career.

The San Francisco 49ers have signed Swilling to their practice squad, according to David Lombardi of The Athletic.

The 49ers are currently 10-4 and are the No. 3 seed in the NFC. They won the NFC West last week and hope to make the Super Bowl in the postseason.

After initially not being released this spring, Swilling spent time with the Tennessee Titans and New Orleans Saints.

Swilling was an immediate impact player for Georgia Tech after coming to Atlanta as a four-star recruit. In his true freshman season, he started 11 games and played in just one game. He had 24 tackles, one sack and an interception during the 2018 season. Swilling started every game of the 2019 season and was named All-ACC honorable mention. In the year He also had a career-high 10 pass breakups in 2019.

In the year The talented cornerback missed six games during the 2020 season and didn’t have the season some thought he might have. In the year 2021 was better, but the fact that Swilling didn’t take a big step toward becoming a top-level player cast doubt on whether he could do that at the next level.

Swilling has the size NFL teams want from their cornerback at 6-0, 200 lbs, but his lack of athleticism and growth at Tech means he will need to improve while on the practice squad. Swilling has the talent to make a roster, but will be a long-term project for any NFL team to take on.
