For this week’s Small Business Spotlight: We sat down with Brandi McNair, owner of Bella Vita Jewelry in downtown Little Rock.

McNair recalls how Bella Vita was born.

“It all started in 2008. I was in a job I didn’t like, and I wanted to make jewelry again,” McNair said. “I was going to a Christmas party and I gave away some of the materials and tools I used to make jewelry for fun. It reminded me of how much fun it was to make jewelry. I got fired from a job I hated and got a job waiting tables at the Argenta Bead Company. I went to every craft show and art show I could get to promote my jewelry. I went to a festival, and that’s how I started.

For McNair, daily tasks include checking emails and social media, meeting with employees to sort out projects and tasks, and making friends with everyone who walks into the store. Chester, McNair’s large chocolate lab, also enjoys greeting customers between sunbathing rounds. McNair explains that the best part of being a small business owner is creating the same environment.

“It’s a Bella Vita vibe. We’ve created something in Little Rock that you can’t find anywhere else, and I love that. I love designing jewelry. Wearing many hats is stressful, but fun,” McNair said. “I love renovating the shop and sourcing items from around the world to create the environment we have here. From the feel to the smell and look, every little detail is important. I also love the warm fuzzy weather. I found out that two shops in the city sent customers to me and what kind of gift to get someone. I make people happy by solving them.

Reflecting on the challenges she faced, McNair highlighted her struggle for representation.

“Personally, I struggle with knowing when to delegate and hire something. There is a challenge to do these two things because you have money. Don’t do it all yourself just because you feel like you can—that’s not a sustainable lifestyle,” McNair says. “I need to delegate more.”

Bella Vita has been a huge success since its doors first opened.

“I often think about the big picture and the overall support we do,” McNair said. “Many customers have supported us since day one. We have built a community. And this is something to be proud of.

McNair shares some of the life lessons she’s learned as a business owner.

“Being authentic and being who you are is very important,” says McNair. “Be honest – do the things you say you’re going to do. That’s really been ingrained in me running this business – just being honest.

McNair offers a few tips for aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners.

“Make sure that whatever you do, it hasn’t already been done everywhere. Make sure your business and ideas stand out and be unique; Use as many resources as you can to research,” says McNair. “Make sure you’re committed to your business because it’s a beast. I call the store my son. My business will not run or survive on its own. Make sure you are ready for the promise.”
