BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, Florida – Being a scholar-athlete at Florida Tech takes an incredible amount of hard work and dedication to excel both in the classroom and on the field.
In this Scholar-Athlete Spotlight, we feature Panther volleyball player Lexi Luger, a sophomore majoring in electrical engineering.
An outside hitter from Seneca, Kansas, Lexi transferred from Johnson County Community College to Florida Tech and helped make an immediate impact. In the year In 2022, Luger recorded 104 kills and 21 total blocks in 22 matches as Florida Tech posted its highest win total in seven years.
Following the season, Lexi was named to the State Conference Commissioner’s and Florida Tech Athletic Director’s Honor Roll with a 4.0 GPA!
As Lexi’s freshman year at Florida Tech comes to a close, we sat down with her to talk about what made her choose Tech and what awaits her in the coming year, both on and off the court.
■ What is your major at Florida Tech, and why did you choose it? Is it something you’ve always wanted to do?
My major is chemical engineering, I originally wanted to be a doctor and was a biology pre-med, but after taking a year and a half of biology I decided that biology wasn’t for me. It’s a lot of memorization and chemistry and math, it’s more like understanding and actually applying that knowledge, so I decided on that.
■ What was it about Florida Tech that made you want to be here?
I knew I wanted a degree in chemical engineering, warm weather[laughs]and sophomore volleyball. So, I made a list of all the schools that had those things and visited a couple of them, but when I visited here, I knew it was him.
■ How do you plan to use your degree after graduation?
It’s still TBD but it’s a very diverse industry, so if I’m not happy with the first thing I choose, there’s always something completely different in the field.
■ What are some fun projects you’ve been able to work on in the classroom?
I haven’t done many projects yet because I’m still a little early in my degree. It’s only been about two years but we did some research on chemical reactors and things like that and that was interesting.
■ Volleyball season begins as soon as students return to campus for the fall, and there’s a lot going on in those three months. How can you balance everything with so much to do?
Well, I definitely try to make time for myself. Do at least one good thing a week for myself, and I always make a list and try to get those things done in a priority order.
■ How has being a college athlete prepared you for what you do now and what will you take away from the court as you apply to college?
Yes, I feel like it taught me how to persevere and learn from failure. It’s okay if you fail at something because then you can try again and maybe do better on your next try.
■ What advice would you give to an athlete coming to Florida Tech interested in chemical engineering?
I’d say you’ll definitely enjoy chemistry and math because it’s totally the main test of that, but if you know you like those things, I’d say it’s worth it because it’s a really fun field.
■ What was your favorite memory from this past season?
I would say Embry-Riddle, it was a game changer for us to see that we were a huge improvement from last year. So just coming in and beating an opponent like that gave us a spark.
■ What are you most excited about heading into the 2023 season?
I’m excited to be with a lot of the same girls again, we haven’t lost a lot of people so I’m excited to play another year with my team and see how far we can go. .
