Flight cancellations during the brutal winter storm create continuous chaos for passengers

Flight delays continued Saturday, disrupting travel during the holiday season as parts of the country were battered by severe winter storms.

They had been up since Saturday morning. According to flight tracking website FlightAware, 1,900 flights to, from and to the US have been canceled. More than 3,800 flights were delayed.

According to FlightAware’s “Misery Map,” Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta and Newark in the New York City region are among the U.S. airports with delays and cancellations.

Saturday’s delays and cancellations followed days of disruption as the storm swept the country, bringing bone-chilling temperatures and whiteout conditions, with reports of “bomb storm” severe weather in the Great Lakes region.

There were about 6,000 canceled flights and about 12,000 canceled flights in the U.S. on Friday, according to FlightAware.

Greyhound Bus Service warned that trips in the Midwest or Upper Northeast may be canceled or disrupted Thursday evening. In the alert, the company listed about 20 cities among those affected, advising passengers to check bustracker.greyhound.com for the latest information on specific routes.

Amtrak said Friday morning that the severe weather had “caused Amtrak to have a lot of service and cancellations between now and Sunday, December 25.” The train company said affected customers should be able to catch trains at the same time or on another day.

Those staying indoors are also dealing with the effects of the storm.

On Saturday, more than 1.6 million homes and businesses were without power nationwide as Arctic blasts and winter storms brought down power lines. The storm is battering the Midwest and parts of the East with heavy snow, blizzard conditions and flooding along the Northeast coast, above freezing temperatures. It is expected to continue until Sunday.

The weather can also affect holiday gifts.

The US Postal Service, UPS, FedEx and Amazon have all said weather is disrupting operations recently.

USPS says it has temporarily closed 89 post offices, UPS warned of “some delivery and collection services.” can hurt And Amazon has “temporarily closed” some of its sites in affected areas.. FedEx said it was experiencing “major disruptions” at two processing centers and that packages expected to arrive Saturday could be delayed.
