August 20— Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA is once again partnering with the Salvation Army, the United Way of Greater Niagara and the Boys and Girls Club of Niagara Falls to distribute backpacks filled with school supplies.

The event will be held today from 1 pm to 5 pm. Members of those organizations will hand out 500 bags to local students in Entrance 6, near the Saks Off 5th and Forever 21 stores. This year, up to 40 volunteers are on hand to help throughout the day, including Niagara County Peach Queen contestants.

According to Fashion Outlets Marketing Manager Sue Switkowski, the backpacks have everything kids need for school, including paper, folders, pens, pencils and highlighters. There will be all different types of bags, some plain and some with characters on them, to appeal to children of all ages.

“Once they’re gone, they’re gone,” she said. “We encourage people to be here about one in five.”

Students in pre-K through 12th grade must be present to receive a bag and are available while supplies last.

Last year, 350 bags were on hand, and some of this year’s gift is left over. Swiatkowski is getting a lot more promotion this year, so they hope to give them all tomorrow.

Also today, the public mural project outside Entrance 3 at Chico and Old Navy continues from noon to 3 p.m. Anyone who stops by to pick up a bag is encouraged to help finish the mural for free. The theme of the mural is “Kindness is Fashion.”

“We’re trying to get people to go through the mall and feel good about going back to school,” said Swiatkowski, adding that stores in the mall have their own back to school sales.
