The annual FGI Rising Star Awards Luncheon has revamped its award categories for the 2023 iteration. The new awards slate features gender-inclusive categories that recognize finalists in fashion such as accessories, fine jewelry, beauty, sustainability, retail, collaborations and related entrepreneurship categories. The ticketed red carpet luncheon was held at The Lighthouse on Chelsea Piers in New York City, with views of Manhattan and the Hudson River for the finalists seeking this type of recognition.
The F.I.I. “It is our honor to recognize the fashion industry with the FGI Rising Star Awards each year as we gather to celebrate the most promising new talent in fashion, beauty and business sectors. FGI is always committed to supporting the industry and our members, whether well established or Emerging Talent Over the years, past FGI Rising Star honorees have gone on to become leading voices in the business, and I can’t wait to cheer our finalists on with their continued success.
Returning in person after a long period of virtual gatherings, the Rising Star Awards will host the 27th annual celebration of innovation, with the evening’s keynote speaker, Patricia Field, kicking off the luncheon. Costume designer and founder of Artifashion, Patricia Feild, along with former model photographer, filmmaker, author and creative director Nigel Barker, Stefano Tonchi and fashion designer Laquan Smith will all present awards.
Patricia Field has had many fashion moments and has boosted the careers of many entrepreneurs during her tenure. She sees the FGI Rising Star Award as a way for young designers to reach their potential as artists in a historical context. she says,Fashion It is a big word that covers many places including magazines, events, designers, etc. About new arrivals – I believe that I have a good reputation for knowing new arrivals because I am always inspired by the fashion trends I meet on the street. An institution of many inspired young fashionistas. Young people tend to be happier, more optimistic and full of ideas.
Field pays homage to the past while FGI celebrates the new. “My philosophy is that the history of fashion – past and present – like other art forms, defines the times we’re living in, both positive and negative. For example, after the First World War, in the twenties, the hem of the skirt became shorter, and the Charleston dance, when women spread their legs in the air – this expresses positivity. The opposite describes the Depression era, when fashion faded and lost its shape,” says Field.
Nigel Barker is a former television host. America’s Next Top Model And Shot On VH1, he shares a similar sentiment with Field. While the younger generations have access to knowledge, Barker agrees that history drives talent. He says, “You can Google some aspects of what happens, but there are real-life situations. I’m on the board of several companies, and lead creative teams in my twenties. All I can do is help look 10-15 years into the future. For them, they’re watching it here and now.”
100 years before the first Rising Star Awards, the FII Talent Show has its own historic value. “I know FGI very well. It’s been around since the 1930s, founded by 17 extraordinary women, including a former editor-in-chief of Vogue,” explains Barker. “And people like Edith Head, major names in the fashion industry. It’s something I know a lot about, and it’s something I believe in too. Helping People – Mentoring. I believe in giving people a chance and a chance, and certainly, my career would not have gotten here without those moments.
Barker continued, “That’s what the Rising Star Awards are all about. It’s amazing to hear who has won that award in history. There is a list of unusual people who have been at the Rising Star Awards – people like Tory Burch, Philip Lim or Warby Parker.
According to Laquan Smith of the eponymous brand, who presented the ‘Ready to Wear’ award that Monday afternoon, “The younger generation today is more aware of the importance of fashion and sustainability. They must learn how important it is to be accurate in the collections they produce. We’re always influenced by what everyone else does, but in my opinion, what makes a great collection is the storytelling of personal journeys and experiences, and allowing your work to be directional and purposeful.
“I feel very strongly about supporting young and emerging designers,” Smith explains, comparing his business over the past decade. “As I know, developing and running your own brand is not an easy task, and I think that getting support and recognition is critical to success, especially in the early stages of a designer’s career. That’s why awards like the FGI Rising Star Awards help highlight the most promising new talent in the fashion, beauty and related industries.” It is important to have arrangements.
