Famous British fashion designer and activist Vivienne Westwood passed away today (December 29) at the age of 81.

Westwood She was an integral part of the British punk movement in the 1970s, helping to shape the scene with her clothes. Early in her career, she designed the Chelsea boutique for sex, which she ran with Malcolm McLaren. Sex later became known as Seditionists: Clothes for Heroes and Westwood, and McLaren went on to wear a sex gun.
Punk icon Jordan, who died earlier this year, worked as a model for Westwood and ran the store, as did Siouxsie And The Banshees and Adam And The Ants musician Marco Pironi, singer-songwriter and formative punk player Gene October and others. They also frequented the store.
Among her signature looks of the period — many of which reappeared in her designs over the decades — were torn T-shirts, ties, plaid patterns, mohair, elastic, ruffles, and safety pin embellishments. Westwood helped bring punk fashion into the mainstream, but she maintained the rebelliousness that permeated her early designs throughout her life.
