Family travel continues to dominate the post-pandemic travel landscape, Airbnb confirmed in a recently released global report. In fact, by 2022, family travel has increased 60% from pre-pandemic levels, with nearly 90,000 destinations and more than 15 million bookings. That said, family time isn’t the only thing driving people to the rental platform. Capacity also plays an important role.

According to the report, families can find Airbnb at larger chains with two bedrooms and two bathrooms for roughly the price of a hotel room. Additionally, a quarter of Airbnb listings have three bedrooms or more, more than a million have cribs for young children, and nearly 90% have kitchens, which can’t be overstated when traveling with family. In fact, all of these factors are total game changers if you’re traveling with a kid or two.

But, as any budget-conscious traveler will tell you, there are more than a handful of variables in the game of saving money, not least of which is the time of year. Fortunately, the report covers that as well. Fall and winter were the most affordable times for families to book Airbnb listings last year, with October, November and December all averaging less than $50 per person worldwide.

Most surprising of all, however, the pursuit of affordable housing hasn’t stopped families from adopting far-flung species. Quite the opposite actually. Airbnb listings with an average of less than $50 per person per night in 2022 and some of the most popular destinations for families include Somerset, United Kingdom. Bridgetown, Barbados; Alghero, Italy; Whakatane, New Zealand; Highlands, Canada; Port St. Lucie, Florida; Washington, Utah; Camui, Puerto Rico; Greater Brisbane, Australia; and Playas de Rosarito, Mexico. The most plausible explanation is that the less money you spend on accommodation, the less you have to spend on literally everything else.
