GREEN BAY – An upcoming event hosted by Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) will shine a light on excellence in technical skills.
The 2023 Technology Challenge allows high school students to use their technology skills and compete for a chance to win a NWTC scholarship.
NWTC Campus Experience Coordinator Kelly Barrett explains what the Tech Challenge is all about.
“The Tech Challenge is an annual competition for high school students, and is designed to promote and reward excellence in academic and technical skills. This also provides scholarship opportunities and encourages students to attend college. It’s about getting students excited about careers and college,” explained Barrett.
Tech Challenge allows high school students to take what they’ve learned through NWTC in their college-accredited classes and bring their ideas to life.
“NWTC partners with many high schools for dual credit options so students can actually earn college credit in high school so the students can learn skills in manufacturing, construction, and so on. The Tech Challenge then allows them to put those skills to work, connecting those classes to real careers,” added Barrett.
There are 200 students registered for Tech Challenge.
As for what the students should expect in terms of prizes and judging when they participate in the Tech Challenge, Barrett said, “We have different challenges like welding skills, robot building, music making, architectural drawing, and so on. Just a few, and we’ll award $20,000 in scholarships. Our judges are from the industry. They are teachers and staff. Many excellent judges will come to judge the students’ work. After the competition, we will conclude with an awards ceremony where we will announce all of our scholarship winners.
NWTC welcomes these high school students on campus and gives them a taste of what college life has to offer.
“We’re excited to have students on campus. Sometimes just taking them to our campus to see our labs and classrooms and meet teachers can help students get excited about their careers and getting into college. Especially after Covid-19, we’re excited to have students on campus again,” Barrett said.
As for Barrett’s advice to students competing in the Tech Challenge, “Do your best and come and have fun!” she said
