Talking to Storge about the new version made me curious about decentralized storage. On the one hand, there are reasons to boost adoption. On the other hand, it also seems to be at odds with other trends such as the sovereign cloud. Here’s what I learned. – Anna
Hacking cloud accounts
The amount of data generated by companies seems to be increasing, but cloud costs are a growing concern.
Earlier this month, we learned that AWS’s annual revenue growth slowed in mid-January as customers looked to cut costs. “Looking forward, we expect these improvement efforts to continue to be a driver of growth for AWS for at least the next two quarters,” Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky said during the company’s earnings call.
While this concern reignites the bare metal debate, it also creates a tailwind for alternative decentralized storage. Represented by players such as Arweave, Filecoin, Internxt, Sia and Storj, it provides a cheap alternative for hyperscalers.
