Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa has been cleared by doctors to travel from his home in Phoenix to Oakland Sunday morning for former Athletics player Dave Stewart’s jersey retirement, the team announced in a statement Saturday morning.
La Russa, 77, has been out of the Sox dugout since Aug. 30 with heart-related issues and is still not cleared to manage, but will attend the ceremony and return to Chicago with the team following their series in Oakland. .
Stewart and La Russa are good friends going back to the late 80s when La Russa was the manager.
The White Sox are 9-3 in La Russa’s absence, with bench coach Miguel Cairo at the helm and the Hall of Fame manager out. The team has not revealed a timetable for La Russa’s return to management, but indications are that he will resume his duties in the near future.
The White Sox (72-68) finished Saturday 1½ games behind the Cleveland Cavaliers in first place in the L Central.
“Just knowing he’s healthy is amazing,” said Andrew Vaughn, who had four hits in Chicago’s 10-2 win Saturday. It’s always scary when health issues come up, and I’m glad he got it,” he said.
