NWS warns of ‘unusually hazardous travel conditions’ for morning commute due to snow expected in Chicago area

According to the National Weather Service, light snow will fall overnight Monday and cause slippery travel conditions for morning commutes in northern Illinois.

A special weather statement and hazardous weather watch was issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Sunday afternoon.

The alerts cover all of northeastern Illinois, including the Chicago suburbs.

Snowfall rates will remain below half an inch per hour, with amounts up to two inches below the surface, the NWS said.

Cooler conditions may allow for soft spots to form on untreated roads Monday morning.

“While the snow will be light with only minimal accumulations, very cold pavement temperatures will result in unusually hazardous travel conditions, at least at local scales,” the NWS said.

Motorists planning to travel tonight or Monday morning should watch for slick surfaces on bridges, overpasses and snow-covered roads.

The snow will end by mid to late Monday morning, the NWS said.

Drivers are encouraged to allow extra time for their journeys.
