This week’s featured Wausau-area business has a long, storied history in the area and is a significant force in the local economy. Borregaard USA, 100 Grand Ave., Rothschild, is part of Borregaard, a leading international producer of lignosulfonates, chemicals derived from lignin. Lingin is the main component of wood and is produced by modifying the by-products of pulp chemical production. These chemicals are mainly used in construction, demolition, agriculture and oil field industries. Beauregard has seven plants around the world and sells in more than 70 countries. Domestically, the company employs 98 workers, producing key components such as binders or dispersants in products.

Longtime Wausau residents will immediately recognize some of the pioneers in the development and application of lignin. The world’s first investigation was conducted by the Marathon Corporation, which started the Rothschild pulp and paper operations in north-central Wisconsin in 1909. Over the years, Linn’s business has grown and prospered – and changed many times. Owners include the American Kahn Company, Reed International PCL, and Daishowa Paper. Finally, in 1991, the Norwegian company Beauregard purchased Daishow and created the current company Beauregard USA – previously called Linotec USA. The company’s main research and manufacturing facilities are located in Rothschild, with sales offices scattered across the country. Plant Manager Tony Young, President and CEO Paul Hendricks and Human Resources Manager Jennifer Rhode say the company’s top strategic priorities are to capitalize on their advances in bio-based and green products to pursue long-term growth opportunities and create further specialization and value growth.

Beauregard is a leader in corporate transparency and is widely recognized for his leadership and performance on climate change issues. In addition, it is a great place to work with diverse opportunities, collaborative colleagues and international networking. Here, learn more about Borregaard and its mission—and the career opportunities that might work for you.
